MCWCF issues $11,206 to county agencies for employee safety purchases

LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Counties Workers’ Compensation Fund (MCWCF) has issued grants totaling $11,206 to agencies providing services in five counties to help reduce employee accidents and injuries, the fund announced June 3 at a virtual meeting of its Board of Trustees.

These sums are part of the MCWCF’s Loss Prevention Grants Program, started in 2014. With this first round of grants in 2020, the fund has issued more than $230,000 over the course of the program so far.

“The latest round of grants reflects the changing nature of the county workplace,” said Timothy K. McGuire, administrator, “as ergonomic chairs and desks become a prime way for our members to avoid employee injuries and higher medical bills.”

Also announced at the June session was the addition of two new members of the fund: the Ferndale Housing Commission and the Ontwa Township Edwardsburg Police Department. The additions raise the fund’s membership list to 82 entities.

The fund was created in 1979 by the Michigan Association of Counties. Its members include counties, medical care facilities, housing commissions, transit agencies, villages, mental health authorities and other specialty county or multi-county endeavors.

In late 2019, the fund issued premium dividends of $3.1 million to members. These dividends reflect remitted premium payments in excess of the fund’s needs.
